The Research Question:
How is reading comprehension impacted when higher order questioning and thinking strategies are incorporated into second grade close reading instruction? The Study: During a 6-week study (2 weeks for assessments and 4 weeks for intervention), 23 second grade students participated in small reading groups using close reading as the format. To move beyond "right there" types of questions, students were gradually exposed to higher order thinking and questioning. Students learned how to think at a higher level, answer higher order questions, create higher order questions, and participate in group discussions. |
